Currently 'our' council is embarking on a 'fill it in' policy, let me elaborate - should you happen to see any footage of Sheffield from the 70's or 80's (the 'Full Monty' perhaps?) you might notice Sheffield had several large underpasses which allowed pedestrians to cross under main road junctions, these are being filled in one by one.

The first one that I think was filled in was at the junction of High St. and Fargate, this underpass not only allowed people to cross one of the busiest roads (second to 'The Moor' perhaps?) but to also enter Boots chemist's and the Gasboards showrooms at below street level. Not long after this was completed Fargate was turned into a pedestrian precinct. Some years later the whole underpass was filled in and following that High St. was made into a bus/tram only road (more on the 'Super' tram later!).

Above:-two photographs of Fargate, both taken from approximately the same view point looking down Fargate from Barkers Pool towards High St. The first image was taken in the early 1960s, the second from the early 1990s. The said underpass unfortunately being at the far end - I will post better photographs if I can source them.
